Chrome Extension Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how the Groundery Chrome extension (the "Extension") collects, uses, and shares information. The Extension operates alongside the Groundery service at groundery.com, which is governed by our main Privacy Policy. Where the two overlap, the main policy controls; this document covers data flows specific to the Extension.
What the Extension does
The Extension adds a sidebar to YouTube watch pages. When you click "Fact-check this video," the Extension sends the video's public YouTube ID to our backend, which fetches the video's caption transcript, extracts factual claims, and checks each claim against public sources. Results appear in the sidebar.
What information we collect
- Authentication. The Extension uses our authentication provider to confirm you are signed in to your Groundery account. We do not store passwords or read your session cookies for any purpose other than confirming your identity to our backend.
- YouTube video identifier and title. On a YouTube watch page, the Extension reads the video ID from the URL and the video title from the page. The title is used only to display what you are about to fact-check; only the video ID is sent to our backend.
- Fact-check requests. When you click "Fact-check this video," we receive the YouTube video ID, your user ID, and your organization ID. We do not receive your browsing history, your cookies for other sites, or any information about other tabs you have open.
What we do NOT collect
- We do not read or transmit data from any website other than YouTube watch pages.
- We do not collect your browsing history, search queries, or cookies from any other site.
- We do not record audio or video from your device.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with advertisers or data brokers.
Third-party services
To fact-check a video, our backend relies on third-party service providers — for example, to retrieve the video's caption transcript, to extract factual claims from that transcript, to search public web sources, to manage authentication, and to host our infrastructure. These providers receive only the data needed to perform their function (such as the transcript and the extracted claims). They do not receive your browsing data, and we do not authorize them to use any data for their own purposes.
Data retention
Fact-check sessions you create through the Extension are stored under your Groundery account so you can view them later on groundery.com. You can delete a session at any time from your dashboard; deletion removes the session record, the transcript, and all extracted claims from our database within 30 days.
