I want to talk to you about fasting. Fasting is so ingrained naturally in what we should be doing. How come we don't hear much about fasting? Do you believe? It's become something that's so

obvious and there's no money. The the pharmaceutical industry, you know, control and I think their number one priority is to make money. >> It's just interesting. We live in this

time where we just have constant consumption and constant barrage of things and dopamine hits and it's not just food. With social media, it's hard to just stop. Eating is a way to lower

our stress because it's pleasurable. So, we snack. Food. It's that signal to tell our body that we're safe. Everyone should go 12 hours without food. I believe that. I believe that if you stop

eating at 7:00 p.m. at night, you should give yourself until at least 7:00 a.m. Like, just give yourself that period of time. 36 hours is probably what I would consider the optimal sort of sweet spot.

how come >> we don't hear much about fasting do you Well, I think that fasting is so ingrained naturally in what we should be doing that it's become something that's

so easy and so obvious that it's not fun to talk about and there's no money in it, right? There's no money in telling someone not to eat food. I feel we live in a world where people want to have it

easy. They want the magic pill, >> but the reality is not sexy. You need to to make a commitment. You need to get out your comfort zone and you need you know it takes takes it takes a point

that it put you outside of your comfort zone right. >> Yeah man. I mean fasting is I think a lot of people view it as extreme and when you talk about it you have to be

very careful because people will be very quick to jump to say that it's a disordered way of eating and that it's very extreme when in reality it's probably the most biologically like

natural evolutionarily accurate way to eat or not eat that we have. I mean we are very very simply designed to have a stimulus a signal from food or not. It's just interesting. We live in this time

where we just have constant consumption and constant barrage of things and dopamine hits. And it's not just food. It's it's social media. It's everything. And it's it's hard to just stop. It's

hard to just stop. And if you sit in stillness and you sit in that quiet even away from food, you know, heaven forbid you have to do that and you have to sit with your own thoughts and your own

hunger and your That's not easy, right? >> But it's something that is so biologically natural. So it's not talked about because it sounds extreme, but it's far from extreme. It's very

natural. >> That's right. And and fasting exists for a long time. We see it in all religion, Christianity Judaism Islam uh Hinduism, Buddhism, they all have

fasting protocols, right? And if you think about our antag, I'm sure they didn't eat three times or five times a day and snack in between, right?

So, it's it's uh it's very interesting that we're would you say we're built for fasting? I'd say we are built for a stimulus or a signal from food and a signal from no food. It's pretty darn

simple. I think that when we are eating food, we have a series of signals that tell our body, you are safe, you have fuel, you are safe to repair and rebuild and and grow, right? And then when you

are not eating, you oftentimes have signals that do kind of counterintuitive things. Signals that say you're somewhat not safe right now. You need to find food. Which is why it upregulates so

much energy and so much of those systems in our body because even though it's unsafe for the body to be in a fast state, it's also that hunger drive that makes us want to perform and drive and

uh also signal a different kind of repair because there's no burden from food coming in. So it's very simple where the body just responds to the food for growth and it responds to no food

for sort of intrinsic repair and recovery in certain ways. >> So it's not that it's good or bad or biologically accurate or not accurate. It's simply the fact that we are

designed to go without food. Period. It's absolutely fine. And we can live for weeks without food. Quite frankly, there's some people that have gone much longer over within a Yeah. the longest

like over a year, right? It's >> the world record, I believe, is uh 382 days. Medical supervision, of course, it was y IV, but it's incredible. >> Yeah, it's it's but we can only live for

a few days without water, right? And obviously a few minutes without air. So when you look at the hierarchy of kind of what we need, you know, when you look at even uh Maswell's like hierarchy of

needs and what we need and you look at those six things, it's like yeah, food, water, shelter, you know, all these things are important, connection, all that stuff is important, okay? But it

doesn't mean that you can't survive without one of those for a lengthy period of time. And it's not all about just making your body stronger. It's more about giving your body an

opportunity to rest in its own signals and rest in its own development and repair versus constantly signaling it with food and sugar and things that are causing the body to have to work

overtime just to deal with those foods. Do you think sometime because we live in a society that we're bombarded all the time because it elevate our level of stress, eating is a way to lower our

stress because it's pleasurable. So we snack and we get into that that sort of problem in our life. >> Yeah, for sure. For sure. Because food for as long as we have history, we can

see that food once again, it's that it's that signal to tell our body that we're safe, right? So it's like food has always been reward. It's always been pleasure. It's always been safety. When

you have food, okay, finally I got the kill. I'm safe. I can eat. Right? So it is deeply ingrained in our psyche and deeply ingrained in our biology to seek that reward from food and seek that

pleasure from food. So when we are in a time of stress now in today's world, stress looks very different than it did 500 years ago, 1,000 years ago, 2,000 years ago, 10,000 years ago, it looks

very different today. It looks different because now you're worried about losing your job and not being able to pay your mortgage. And you're also worried about what people think about you. and you're

worried about all constant barrage of just concerns and stress. Whereas thousands and thousands of years ago, it would be stress just to simply stay alive. That's right. And you would have

a surge of stress and then you would have your fuel and you'd have your recovery and you'd have your food and you'd have your pleasure and your reward. So here we are constantly

stressed in today's world and we're constantly trying to battle that stress with something to signal to our body that we're safe, which most of the time it's food. So people emotionally eat

because it's just available and it's a coping mechanism for the constant stress that >> we talk about stress. Stress could be detrimental. Uh you know fighters flight

that we're bombarded all the time you know but there's also we talk about stress. There are stresses that are beneficial. Training is a stress that is beneficial. Fasting could be a stress

that is beneficial if you use it for the right reason. I want to talk about the different type of fasting and and how do you differentiate certain type of fasting, long fasting

and and timerestricted eating and what are the benefits of each? Yes. Each of them say off the top of my head, you know, there's a variety of different kinds of fasting. So, let's start with

like the standard um fasting that a lot of people do, which is like the 168 fasting where they just fast almost every day for 16 hours. they just skip breakfast and they do, you know, eight

hour eating window. That's like a standard intermittent fasting protocol. Um, I'm going to put that one aside because I don't consider that like a deep fast. I consider that almost more

lifestyle. A lot of people do that and don't even realize they do >> every every day. You know, it's just like I'm very similar to that. A lot of times I don't eat breakfast. I have to I

have to tell myself to eat breakfast sometimes so that I don't undereat. >> I don't eat breakfast like I since I dis discovered fasting. But now I start reincorporating my breakfast because you

told me typically what I do like my standard is you know like four days per week I will eat breakfast and eat relatively normal three square meals sort of thing. Um but I still have a

minimum minimum 12-h hour fast always like I think everyone every single person minimum go 12 hours without eating. I wouldn't consider it a fast. >> When you say a fast to interrupt you

you're allowed to drink water in that 12 hour. Yes. I just mean like everyone should go 12 hours without food. I believe that. I believe that if you stop eating at 7:00 p.m. at night, you should

give yourself until at least 7 a.m. Like just give yourself that period of time, that rest and digest. We are absolutely. So I don't consider that fasting. I consider that baseline. Okay? And then

what I'll do is uh you know like three days per week I will do like an 18 to 20 hour fast. So for me it's going to be skipping breakfast usually skipping lunch and then eating something

mid-afternoon and then having a pretty big, you know, dinner, right? And I'll do that two, three, sometimes four days a week, but usually two or three days a week. And I do that because I like to

have fasting sort of be the anomaly, the shock to the system because if you fast every day, >> your body acclimates to that adapt. It just adapts. And so eventually you're

not doing yourself much good other than just maybe a convenient lifestyle of skipping breakfast. But what I like to do is actually keep the body guessing a little bit. So have breakfast, keep my

cortisol low so that my body's always knowing that there's less, you know, like not this constant stress. and then you know fast fast you so it's like it's a shock to my body and that way I'm

getting speaking of the stress you're talking about that hormetic stressor that's triggering adaptation because I encourage people don't look at fasting as just caloric restriction that's a

benefit but the minute the thing you're looking after is like an acute stress signal you want fasting to be enough of a stressor that it's telling your body this person is under stress we need to

sign repair we need to do this we need to do that all these signals very very important. Um, that only happens if your fasting length is an anomaly, is abnormal from your norm. Right?

>> So, that's like my style of fasting. >> Then we get into like maybe the 24-hour fasts, which I think are great. I think a 24-hour fast um, you know, is once you get past 16 hours, 18 hours, that's when

the magic starts. So, you don't start getting serious autophagy and cellular cleanup and the cellular repair until you're 16, 18 hours into effect. >> 16 18. Okay, it starts then. So 24 hours

is a great spot because you just get to that where you're getting six hours or so of really good deep fasting, right? So 24-hour fasting is great. Okay. Then there's obviously we could go into

detail about 40 36 hours is like another benefit. 36 hours is probably what I would consider the optimal sort of sweet spot. Bang for the buck, right? Really. So like a three-day fast is very very

powerful for many reasons. It's probably, you know, one of the most powerful, but bang for the buck, 36 hours is great. 36 is you can you can do that with very little muscle loss. You

can do that with uh it's very easy to do 36 hours for most people. They don't struggle too bad with it. Um you know, something happens at that 48 hour mark where it's like you're going two days

without dinner. That's when people start to trip up. That's it gets hard. But 36 hours, I think almost anyone can do one full day without food and one skip and one breakfast, right? Just boom. That's

all you got to do for and it's and you get about 70% of the benefits of a three-day fast in 36 hours. >> Oh wow. >> So the 30% of benefits that you get

after that are very spec like if you're going to a 72 Yes. are very specific for the gut and very specific with stem cells. >> Right.

>> So in in my case for example ulcer ulcer colitis it's very beneficial to 72. >> Yes. That extra that extra day and a half is is pretty much critical for what you're doing because that's where the

benefit comes. But everything else from a longevity perspective, I find that 36 hours is the sweet spot. You get the longevity benefit without the risk of muscle loss. And and you know, you and I

have a good amount of muscle on us, so it's not a huge deal. But when you're talking about people that maybe aren't aren't training a whole lot, every ounce of muscle that they have is precious as

they get older, right? That that's your metabolism. That is everything. So, um you know, you don't want to take someone that's 70 years old and that doesn't have a lot of muscle and encourage them

to do lots of fasting because it's a risk. it's a risk that they can't afford because it'd be very hard for them to put that muscle back on, >> right? So, so for someone that's like

older, unless they're experienced, you know, I usually say, "Hey, you know, 36, 48 hours is perfect." >> How long into a fast you start losing muscle in general? It does it has

something to do with how much fat do you have or >> That's a good question. It does depend. Uh, you know, if you have more fat on hand, your body is definitely going to

be more apt to burn the fat. So, you're you're in a safer spot there. But one of the most important things that people forget is if you don't use it, you lose it. Okay? So when you remember we talked

about signals. Food is a signal. Training stimulus is also a signal. Okay? When you lift up a weight, it is telling your brain, hey, this person is using this muscle. This muscle is

relevant for survival. Right? So don't burn that muscle. Hm. >> In fact, I don't know if you knew this, but 70% of muscle protein synthesis of actually building muscle comes from the

stimulus itself. The rest is pretty much protein, right? So, eating protein is great for building muscle. The most important thing, 70% of the most important thing is the stimulus, putting

tension on the muscle. So, that's why when you came in Montreal, we were doing our three-day water fast. We were in our third day and you're like, George, it's important that we train. Yes.

>> More than ever. this and you don't have to train with this high intensity. It's about keeping tension on the muscles. So again, the body says, "Okay, I'm in survival mode." However,

he's using this muscle. So clearly this is important for survival. So let's not burn that. That's the mistake that I think you see a lot of the longevity experts kind of you see like uh some of

them changed their minds a little bit on fasting. They're like, "Oh, I'm not fasting as much because I didn't want to lose muscle." But when I've talked to them, I'm like, "Well, what are you

doing when you're fasting?" They're like, "Oh, I I take my I barely train. I walk." I'm like that's the problem like that. >> We are a machine that is you know this

organism is meant to move like and it's simple signal input output. If you are not telling your body >> that it is needed to lift that that this muscle is necessary and you're not

eating of course it's going to burn that muscle. It's not metabolically necessary. Right? So the body's trying to find efficiency. So if you're like fasting and you're not training the

closest line of efficiency is the body says well get rid of this metabolically expensive muscle. we don't need that. This guy's starving. But if you're using that muscle, the body says, "No, we need

that." Like, "We need that. Don't burn that. Burn the fat instead." So, it's I think now more than ever with people with fasting, it's important to and you don't need to exhaust yourself, but you

need to resistance train. M and uh another question I I want to ask you is someone is obese and someone is slim, is it easier for the person who's obese to do fasting because he has more fat to

burn or or is is is it proven or it's it's only subjective? >> It's believe it or not a very technical question because it gets into a number of different things like uh I don't know

if you've heard of leptin before. Leptin is a hunger hormone. associated with hunger. It's a it's a satiety hormone. When you have people that are very obese,

they oftent times have a very hard time tapping into that fat because of leptin because they have these hormones that are basically signaling to the brain. Um it's a thing called leptin resistance.

So when you have a lot of fat on your body, fat sends a signal to your brain that says, "Hey, like we have enough food on hand. we have fat on hand, you don't need to eat. Right? So like if

someone in theory has a fat on them, lots of fat on them, it should be telling their brain, hey, you have enough fat, you don't need to eat. >> It's like a bear who goes to

hibernation. He wants to make himself fat. So he >> it's it's so it's so you have this fat and it tells your brain, hey, you have enough fat on hand. You don't need to

eat. But the pro But if that was the case, then how come people that are fat are always wanting to eat more, right? They're always hungry. And what happens is because the brain gets desensitized

to the leptin when you have so much fat on you and it's sending this leptin signal. It's like I always say it's like if I was calling an ex-girlfriend and I kept calling her and kept calling her

and kept calling her until she finally blocked me. That's what happens with leptin in the brain. So fat people have so much fat that is pumping out leptin that the the it's constantly picking up

the phone and calling the brain to the point where the brain actually develops resistance and no longer answers that signal. >> Oh wow.

>> So that's the real interesting thing that happens with obesity is that people have more fat on them and their brain doesn't register it. So they just keep eating and eating. So fasting can be

very difficult for obese people at first but it doesn't take long. They like we've seen in the literature that like you know if people just consistently fast for a couple of months it brings

that leptin like just doing short fasts it brings that leptin sensitivity back where the the brain starts to pick up the phone again and once the brain starts to pick up the phone again then

fasting becomes a breeze. So I always tell people that are like obese or have a lot of fat to lose start with small fasts. Start like 12 16 hours and do that for just a couple weeks and get

your body used to it so that leptin starts working again and then do the longer fasts. So if someone who's has a obesity problem and does not like to work out much, you would tell him to

start doing short fasts, right? To in order to lose weight, do it more more often for a shorter period of time. >> Exactly. Right. Than doing a long one and work your way up to the longer ones

because um you know eventually if they were to just continue to fast eventually it would work. It would just be hard for them. They would find if you took someone that had, you know, a hundred

extra pounds of fat on them and they had never fasted before and you asked them to do a three-day fast, they absolutely could do it and they absolutely would lose fat, but it would be difficult.

They would be very hungry. Whereas you and I who are like metabolically healthy, after about 24 hours, we're not hungry anymore. >> Whereas those people that signal is

going to keep going because it's disrupted. >> So it takes a little more time for them. So, it's important that I always just say just so that they don't have a bad

experience, start small and work your way up. I I like what you just said because there's a a school of thought that people like, oh, if you're if you're fat, it's because you have a a

gene, you know, it's a gene problem. But I think it's >> it's disempower people to make the right choice and be able to take take their their health in their own hands. I think

it's important to mention it, you know. >> Yeah. the genetic polymorphisms that cause obesity are less than I believe it's less than 1% of the obesity population. So, I'm not saying that it's

uh that you're not genetically predisposed to obesity, >> but the polymorphisms that actually can make you obese, it's a very small amount of people.

>> I want to talk about there's certain people that are not big fan of fasting. They would say, "Oh, you can have a calorie restriction and eat many times during your day." What would be the

difference if we consume the same amount of calorie for example, but instead of doing a fast, I eat like in a in a certain window of time, but for the certain same amount of calorie for, for

example, for a few days, >> is is it more advantageous to to fast what the literature is is telling us? >> There's two things I'll say. Uh the first thing is the most important thing

is what you can adhere to. Hands down, I have no problem with caloric restriction. I think caloric restriction works. Um, and I'm I'm not discounting that it isn't effective, but I can give

my opinion and I can cite the literature on it is that when or I can at least describe a mechanism. Let's say you have two two people. One person restricts their calories daily for seven days and

another person restricts their calories the exact same amount except they do it by fasting two days. Okay. >> Okay. And at the end of the week they have are in the same calorie deficit.

Which one which one was better? Well, both of them probably lost weight. Both of them probably lost similar amounts of fat. Where we do see differences, although it's small in short amounts, is

the fasting group usually has better improvements in metabolic outcomes, mitochondrial outcomes, uh PGC1A, insulin resistance, um improvements in, you know, more autophagy. So, you get

these different signals that are better. And what it comes down to is there's a an energy sensor in our body. It's called EMPK, okay? AMP AM or protein kynise. And think of it as like a um a a

volume knob. Okay? >> And that volume knob goes up to 10. >> If you crank it all the way to 10, that is like you are in a deep deep deep calorie deficit where you are without

food. Okay? When you are in just regular caloric restriction, it's like you're only turning it to like a three or a four. >> Oh,

>> okay. And it's that way for a whole week. Yes, that's great. and you're going to burn calories. But there's benefit to cranking it all the way to 10 because when you crank it all the way to

10, you go into a deeper caloric deficit. And when you get into that deep caloric deficit, you have more signaling for aggressive change in the body. It's like a difference between, you know,

like dipping your toe in some water versus sticking your arm all the way in and really immersing your So, you're going to get equally wet if you put your finger in the water for a week or you

can just do it all now, right? >> Oh, yeah. One shot. >> So, that whole AMPK sort of dial is very important. So, it's on one hand it's splitting hairs, but on the other hand,

it's like I'm a fan of living in that way where I go all the way and then I come all the way back. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> Plus, it's more fun. I don't want to

just like sit there and eat like, you know, celery and mustard. I'd ra I would rather fast for two days and then enjoy my [ __ ] food. >> Yeah. Get get away with it. Yeah.

Faster. Exactly. you suffer more for a shorter per period of time than to stretch it for Yeah. Yeah. One thing I I can say is that for my personal experience is that um I just wish I

would have discovered fasting earlier in my life. Uh I just had a Achilles tendon injuries uh last summer that prevent me for from running for two months and I was doing physio everything to make it

better and sometime it it felt great but as soon I was starting to run again it it I feel a sharp pain and I do four uh three three days water fast a year and when I did my three-day water fast

and I had that injury Y my injury sort of disappeared. It it's borderline magical. Well, I know there is nothing ma ma magical about it, but it's it's scientific, but it's it killed my

inflammation probably and it helped my tissue to repair. Um, if I would have known fasting earlier in my life, I would have used it even as a professional athlete maybe to

to recuperate from my injuries or maybe after a fight, right? That would be a good way. If you would be a competitive professional athlete, would you use it for that? I absolutely use it for that

and there is a a very key difference that I notice between you know my recovery if I fast versus my recovery if I don't and it's a global thing it's not a it's not just like isolated thing you

know so it's like if I'm fasting frequently it's like my overall baseline state of inflammation is lower >> like that baseline we all have a certain level of inflammation at baseline like

if you didn't have inflammation you would die like obviously we have have it I think because when exercise, your inflammation goes up, right? It's it's normal. Like your inflammation goes up,

recovery takes a lot of inflammation. And there's a fine line. If your baseline is here and you spike your inflammation from training and this is the top threshold, and you push yourself

over, that's not doing you any good up there, right? That that area up there is actually starts to be counterproductive. It's like we need just just a little bit of inflammation to kickstart recovery.

So what I've done is my baseline inflammation, and I've measured this multiple times, my baseline inflammation is about a half a point lower. So it's significantly lower. So when I do spike

it with training, I have a lot more wiggle room. I'm not spiking into the dangerous territory. And when I say dangerous, it's like >> I think athletes can experience this.

Like if you're going through a really heavy training block, you don't necessarily feel good when the training block ends. like you actually need that time to recover, right? That's why you

have a loading week, what they call de loing. >> Yeah. >> And I notice it even uh like puffiness and water retention. Like when I'm

training really hard and pushing my body, I actually look worse. I look, you know, tired. I circles under my eyes. I'm exhaust. You can tell when I'm training hard. And that's because my

inflammatory state goes up. >> Yeah. So, if I can lower my baseline, it makes it so that I can tolerate more before I tip into that state where I'm run down. And how about the growth

hormone production? It it's spiked to after and that's significant. I mean, >> that's what helped you heal, right? >> I believe. So, I think there's a number of different things. I think that the

growth hormone response is a significant one. Um, I think there's also, you know, what are called chaperoning proteins. There's also all kinds of things that like allow proteins to essentially

aggregate and form the way that they should. Um, but yes, that's a very big one. It's just being able to have that spike in growth hormone alongside, you know, adequate protein when it is time

to eat, right? So, it's like >> that signal because the the growth hormone pulses that you get when you're fasting are specifically designed in your body to protect the muscle during a

fast. That's why they release. They actually you release growth hormone when you're fasting because your body is trying to preserve muscle. So, you can capitalize on that and use that growth

hormone for growth, too, right? And it's people might say, "Well, how do you possibly use growth hormone for growth if there's no food coming in?" Well, again, we come back to that same thing.

It's a signal. Okay? The growth hormone is telling your muscle to preserve and to grow or to at least preserve. So then when you do have food on top of that later on, you get this growth and

recovery. So the stimulus is happening during the fast, the actual repair happens right after. >> We talk about inflammation. There's something that happened to me sometimes

after a hard training. I feel tired then I go eat and I'm not as disciplined as you Thomas. I I eat a lot of sugar sometimes and when I like something like a ice cream I'm I have the tendency to

take too much. Is it just an idea? But I feel sometime after I eat a big dessert I feel bloated and I feel like my body especially certain places that are more inflamed than others.

>> Yeah. you know, is it just my my in my head or it's really a phenomenon that happens when you eat sugar is it sort of make you blow up? >> Yes, I think that it's a again you're

getting this you're able to highlight where you have sensitivities and we've seen we've seen this in other literature and we've seen it with there's a protocol called the autoimmune paleo

protocol which is designed for people with autoimmune conditions where they go on this extremely restricted diet. It's not fasting, but they restrict their diet. Uh, no night shades, no um

legumes, no nuts, no I mean it's extremely restrictive, but the whole point is to be able to remove anything that is going to be like triggering inflammatory conditions and then you

slowly introduce foods in and you monitor what happens, >> right? >> Sorry, what triggers inflammatory response like a trigger or

>> It can vary. Well, any food is going to trigger a small inflammatory response. It's called the postprandial inflammatory response. So, whenever you eat, you have inflammation, and that's

that's normal. But most people have one or two things that affect them more, right? Like um like I speak for myself, uh like almonds and cashews. I mean, I eat those and within an hour I'm like,

what is wrong with my wrist? Like it's I'm so sensitive to them. >> I never would have figured that out if it wasn't for fasting because my whole diet was just mixed and I could have it

would have been so hard to isolate a variable and it took one experience for me. I was coming off of a 48 hour fast and I was like, "Oh, cashews sounds so good. I'm craving cashews." So, I ate

cashews. And I mean, I'm kidding you not, within like 45 minutes, my I felt like I I felt like I herniated a disc in my back. My wrist was hurt. I was like, "What is going on?" Like, all it was was

cashews. The next time I did a fast, I just didn't eat the cashews. I just I didn't even think of it, but I had something and I didn't feel that way. And I started to connect the dots. So,

then I'm like, "Oh, you know what? That's interesting. I had cashews after I broke that fast. I'm going to eat some cashews now. And I started getting the same kind of feelings. The thing is is

what fasting does is it makes you so sensitive >> that you feel those things. And some would say, well, I don't want to be that sensitive. I don't I mean, I want to

know. I want to know what I respond to. I don't. >> And some people actually process sugar fine. It's I think there's when you get into that I mean sugar is definitely

problematic but I think when you get down to it there are like epigenetic types and there are people that handle sugar better than other people. Um but you know for me sugar is hugely

problematic. Like I I am very inflamed with sugar. I'm very inflamed with certain nuts. Um I'm very inflamed with even like kale really causes issues with me.

>> Oh yeah. >> Though it's just does that mean that that food's bad? Not necessarily. But it means that fasting has given me this clean litmus test.

>> Generally speaking, which food are the most inflammatory for people like and and inflammation is the cause to a lot a lot of problem. >> I mean sugar probably is number one

>> sugar. >> Um high fructose corn syrup, anything that's like high concentrated fructose. >> Can you give me an example of >> I mean those are like the types of

things that are in it's basically another kind of sugar, right? It's basically the stuff that's in like a you know a fruit juice or things like that like like a not good fruit juice.

>> Um >> there's these things called you've probably heard of trans fats before. Trans fats are um you like in margarine they're in anything on the label that

says hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil. >> Uhhuh. >> That's where they take a fat and they add a hydrogen molecule to it to make a

an oil solid. So like the cream filling of an Oreo. That's a perfect example of something where it's actually a liquid oil that they've added a hydrogen to make it more of a saturated.

>> Oh god. >> So, and the Oreo the cookie. >> Yeah. So, like this. So, it's like anything. And that's And I'm being very concerned.

>> Man, I love those cookie. God damn. >> Well, there's a um I don't know if you have Trader Joe's in Montreal, but Trader Joe's is a store here. They have a version that's called Jojo's where

they're still an Oreo, but they don't use the hydrogenated stuff. So those are and I'm being very conservative with those because those are ones that have strong like randomized control trial

clinical evidence behind them as these are very inflammatory and very bad. Um if you start getting into the weeds, high high concentrations of even regular saturated fat can be inflammatory, but

it's usually only if they're in combination with some sugar, too. Okay? So like the worst things that you eat are the things that are combining saturated fat and combining sugar. It's

literally the most like inflam chemical, right? >> It's just it if you think about it, you can reverse engineer this and realize like where where in nature do you have a

high amount of fat and a high amount of sugar naturally occurring together? Can you name one food? >> Yeah. >> It's a man-made thing. Yeah.

>> Right. So it's like you think highfat, high carbohydrate, that's a Snickers bar. That's a pizza. That's a That doesn't exist in nature. In nature, it's very like one or the other. You have

protein and fat from your meat or you have [ __ ] sugar from fruit. >> Okay. And those in isolation are not really problematic. It's when like when in nature would you ever have both. Very

seldom. If you went back 10,000 years, like I know you're into paleontology that you think like what did their diet look like? We don't may not know for certain. They might have gotten some

some nuts, you know, depending on where the region is, but for the most part in the winter, >> yeah, you live in a in an ice age. You you have to you have to hunt. Yeah.

>> You're going to be probably largely ketogenic. Lots of meat, lots of fat. And then in the summer, you get this opportunity to to get some fruit, you know, but you're not having robust

amounts of carbohydrates, and you're certainly not having robust amounts of carbs and fat together. There's like I can't think of a single food. Maybe a coconut kind of has some sugar in it and

has some fat. >> Oh, yeah. But it also is like one of the most calorically dense foods. Anyway, so if if you're given a choice, do you use butter or margarine?

>> Oh, butter. Here you go. >> Explain to me why. For some reason, some people believe like margarine because it's vegetital, it's more healthy. >> Yeah, margarine is pure 100% like that's

hydrogenated oil. they they there there's a whole like you could get political on why that got pushed through essentially but basically the goal was to like you know reduce the animal

saturated fats but it is a pure trans fat. It is um I would say the margarine by its classical definition is the most dangerous food you could eat really >> because it is pure hydrogenated trans

fats. It's it's they take hydrogen and they are taking an oil, an industrialized seed oil that's essentially been chemically adulterated to become a an oil in the first place

and then they treat it with hydrogen to make it a solid. So the the the claim is that well this is a vegetable oil and it's going to be more heart healthy. Whereas now we have the evidence that

trans fats are trans fat. I mean there's no debate there. There's no debate. Like all a isisles of the nutritional dogmas agree that trans fats are just awful. So I don't they I know they're trying to

change how like margarine is made. It's slightly different. Doesn't doesn't have as much hydrogenated stuff, but it's still just like a highly industrialized oil that's put into a solid. I mean,

you're much better to just have the real. >> Of course. Wow. I'm going to tell that to my mom. Like I'm going to translate this whole part to him for to her so she

can understand. My goodness, she she used Margarine. pushed it hard. I mean, I grew up using it, too. It was like >> um you know, country croc and what was the other one? Uh, can't believe it's

not butter. All the stuff that we were like told. I remember being a kid and being afraid of butter. You know, >> if you want to be as healthy as possible, what do you use to cook

something on your on the oven? >> I'm still I'm a big I'm a big avocado oil guy. Avocado oil is uh has a high smoke point. >> Even when it burns, it's still

>> Yeah, cuz it's it's got like a 500 degree smoke point, so it has to get very hot. Okay. So, avocado oil is great. Um, if I'm cooking at a low temperature, olive oil. Uh, I cook in

tallow most of the time. A little bit of coconut oil, but coconut oil not good all the time. So, you know, I'll cook in tallow. I like ghee. Ghee a whole lot is one of my favorites.

>> It is true that there's oil that are good when you you take it raw, but when you burn it, it change the chemical structure. Why? Why is that? Can you explain that to us? And which one are

good raw and bad to use for cooking? Yeah, that's that comes down to uh what are called the hydrogen bonds, right? So a we have what are called monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated

fats and saturated fats. Okay, saturated fats uh the best way to understand them is if you were to take a saturated fat and you put it into the refrigerator, it would turn into a solid. Okay, that's a

saturated fat. So it's like if you cook a steak and you put it in the fridge, the fat's going to harden, right? Uh same with like Yeah. any kind of like coconut oil. Another good example,

saturated fat. It's liquid at room temperature, but then it turns to a solid. Um, a monounsaturated fat and a polyunsaturated fat are very unique because they have

multiple hydrogen um, bonds, right? Or so when you have the monounsaturated fat, I want you to imagine a dinner table, okay? And this dinner table has all kinds of seats at it, okay? And each

one of these seats is like a um a a carbon carbon atom. Okay, a monounsaturated fat means that it has one unsaturated bond. Okay, so mono meaning one unsaturated fat. So it means

that all of these carbon chains are essentially locked together except for one. Okay, >> so technically it becomes a liquid because it's not all saturated. So a

monounsaturated fat is like an olive oil and an avocado oil. Okay. >> The reason those oils are so good is because when you heat them, >> there's only one open seat for oxidation

to come in. >> Yeah. >> So the monounsaturated fat because that one mono is removed, you are left with just only one spot that can become

oxidized. So it takes a lot to oxidize a monounsaturated fat like olive oil or avocado oil. >> Yeah. a polyunsaturated fat. The best example I can give is they are very very

good when they are extremely fresh. Okay. So like fish is a great example. Fish oil. Fish is a it's polyunsaturated fats. But if you leave fish out on a table, it's going to start to rot and

stink. >> Yeah. >> And that's oxidation because instead of monounsaturated fat having one unsaturated bond,

>> many seat left, >> poly means many seats removed. So you have lots of opportunity for oxidation. So they go rancid really fast. And when they go rancid, they become what's

called oxidized. And when you consume an oxidized oil, those oxidized oils incorporate into your cells. They incorporate and you have literally toxic compounds that are incorporating into

your cells. That's where the big problem with like people talk about seed oils and things like like seed oils themselves are not really that bad. It's the fact that they oxidize so fast.

>> They're usually processed foods. So made with seed oils and then they're sitting on a shelf for months or years. So they're absolutely oxidized. So it makes them shelf stable, but essentially

they've gone rancid. So that's why it's like you never want to cook with like a canola oil or you never want to cook with a vegetable oil. I want to go back to fasting. What is the common mistake

you see people do when they they use they practice fasting >> during a fast itself? >> During a fast or after a fast? I I know one of my mistake I share share with you

that personally I I I have the tendency you know you're not very hungry when when you break your three three days water fast but as you start eating your hunger sort of yeah appears and and you

you end up eating too much and you feel bloated that I I've done that a few times >> and what other things that you see that is common mistakes

>> I'll give you two I'll give you one that happens during fasting and one that happens when people break their fast during fasting it's one You and I talked a little bit earlier about it is the uh

people like adding like a packet of uh stevia or monk fruit or sucralose or splenda to their to their coffee or their tea. I'm okay with having coffee and tea when people are fasting if they

want to. It's okay. Uh but when you use those packets to sweeten your coffee or to sweeten your tea, those have dextrose in it and that is that is pure sugar. Okay? Even though it's a zerocalorie, no

sugar sweetener, the FDA, at least in the United States, the FDA allows for, you know, a certain amount to be included before they have to count it as a carbohydrate. So there's actually

almost two grams of carbohydrates from pure sugar in a packet of Splenda. There's like 1 point 1.4 or something. So you're, you know, if you put two packets of stevia or two packets of

Splenda in your tea and you're fasting, you just have three two to three grams of sugar. That may not sound like much and it's not, but that absolutely breaks a fast. That's absolutely going to cause

an insulin spike. And one of the main reasons that we fast is to keep insulin low. So, that's a big one. Um, if you absolutely positively must have something sweet,

>> they make like liquid stevia, liquid monk fruit, which is in like a water dropper versus instead of >> That's crazy. Why Why doing it like Yeah. You know, you're fasting. It's

like >> Yeah. I I prefer to not have sweet things when I'm fasting because it's just like and part of what I'm trying to do with fasting is reset my taste as

well. >> The other mistake that people make is like when they're breaking their fast. It's very similar what you talk about is they what we did when we were in

Montreal which they don't have something small first or they don't you know it's breaking with bone broth taking care of the gut because >> the gut mucosal layer breaks down when

you fast okay it breaks down before it repairs. One of the reasons that it breaks down is it shells off a lot of the like the old kind of funky parts of the gut mucosal layer that might be

broken. So a lot of that gut mucosal layer actually thins and gets weaker during the fast and then it starts to rebuild after you eat. So you get a big increase in stem cells in the gut which

is why it's so good for ulcerative colitis. But you can massively improve like the ulcer of colitis symptoms and the gut health by breaking your fast strategically because if you break your

fast with just a bunch of food right when you break your fast, >> your gut is in a very sensitive position and you can actually cause a lot of damage at that point in time that might

make you cause more issues down the line. So like I always say like drink some bone broth or just have like a small amount of lean protein. You want to eat something small and that triggers

to the body, okay, like we're we have food again. Let's turn the system back on. Gets the gut mucosal layer prepared and then you can have more food. >> That's why you made me when you came in

Montreal and we broke our three days water fast together. You you made me cook a little bit of chicken like a tease, you know, like I wanted to eat more, but you said no.

>> And one thing that you taught me that is very interesting, Thomas, is the importance of once you eat to not stay still or lay down on the couch. why doing something or just taking a little

walk is so important. >> Yeah, it's a particularly because we had a little bit of honey. Uh we had like you know a small just like 15 grams of carbohydrates from honey. And the reason

we added that in is because it's u it's a parasympathetic trigger. So it tells your body that you're you're the fast is over. Like you know it's like it's like a little bit of sugar from honey tells

your body very cleanly >> your blood sugar would can really skyrocket quite a bit. >> And that's not so much the problem. What it is is that that blood sugar will go

high and then it will drop and you'll find yourself really really hungry and you'll find yourself in a spot where you're just not uh you're not feeling your best. So if we go for a like have

some sugar and then we go for a little walk. >> Yeah. >> It allows that sugar to come into the muscle without having to spike insulin

because the muscle when it contracts it actually triggers the intake or the uptake of glucose without having to release insulin. So in this case, what we were trying to do is mitigate or

reduce how much insulin the body had to release by going for a walk so that the carbohydrates would soak up into our muscle rather than flow through the bloodstream. Would you advise someone to

always do that even if he's if he's not breaking a fast like in after a normal meal to go for a walk immediately after? Is it is it a good uh a good routine to have? It is it is hands down the uh

lowest hanging fruit easiest thing that someone can do to control their blood sugar is go for a 5 to 10 minute walk after eating carbs. >> Wow. So you you have to move. You the

worst thing is to lay down in a couch like we most of us do and watch TV or >> Yeah. It's it's phenomenal. It's called the ins insulin independent glucose uptake. So you know it just like the

name implies insulin independent. It happens independent of insulin. So, if you're diabetic or you're insulin resistant and you have a your pancreas has a hard time producing insulin, you

can eat carbohydrates and help them get into the cell just by going for a walk or moving. >> Very interesting. Wow. So, if someone wants to lose weight, it's it's a good

good thing to add to his routine. >> It's extreme. And it doesn't take much. I mean, five minute walk. >> I want to talk about the difference uh for a woman and a man for fasting.

Women have cycle for their periods. how a woman a woman should fast because there is different pro protocols right you'll get different answers from different people some will say you know

during the uh like follicular phase so like what you will find is that from a muscle preservation standpoint women can fast during their during their

cycle or around their cycle with technically better metabolic effects >> but it's significantly harder for them to do it. >> Okay.

>> Okay. So, the reason I say that is because it's just like you talk to any any woman that's around her period, she's going to say, "I have cravings. I have Yes. They have massive

upregulations in hunger hormones." And it would uh so it's like fasting is more difficult for them, but it's actually from a hormonal perspective quite a good time to fast. So, you have to ask

yourself, are you looking to fast for maximum benefit or are you looking to fast for at least a little bit of benefit? Um, because if they fast during like their ovulation period and things

like that, >> you know, they're usually in a much uh their mood's at a better place. They have less appetite. It's actually quite easy for them to fast

>> really. >> So, it but you know, some people will actually say the flip-flop. It's just it all depends on really what aligns with you. You know, my wife would not mind me

saying this. I can just use her as example. When she's, you know, surrounding her like ludial phase or when she she's not comfortable and if you were to make her fast, she would be

miserable. Like she needs to keep herself fed during that period. It's just um but you know, she can she can go just fine another time of the month. So, it's just kind of a balance. But I also

do think that women need to start themselves a little bit smaller and maybe, you know, I don't know if they need to go the full 72 hours. I think that they can get a lot of that benefit

from that 36-hour because we don't have a lot of clinical data that shows men versus women with longer fasts. >> We just don't have it. So, it would make perfect sense that when you put a woman

into a more extreme calorie deficit that it could be harder on their thyroid hormone. It could be harder on these things. But it just comes back and it begs the question like if we went back

10,000 years again, yeah, they would go times without food, too. That's right. The only thing that it might downregulate is their reproductive hormones. So if you're in a time of

famine where you're not eating, sperm count goes down for the man, testosterone goes down for the man, and I'm sure that u ovulation changes for the female and the ability to get

pregnant. So, and then you know it gets kind of complicated because when you start looking at what's called PCOS, polycystic ovarian syndrome and you look at a lot of these issues that women deal

with with irregularity of their cycles and things um that there is a very strong link between insulin resistance and those irregular patterns. So then it begs the question of does it matter if

you fast and it's a little hard on your body if you actually can correct those big things like we have evidence on uh I think that was mainly on the ketogenic diet with PCOS like PCOS um basically I

think it was a pretty small study I don't want to butcher it entirely is it was small it was only like five or six people in this particular study but it was six women that could not get

pregnant they because they had PCOS they put them on I think 60 days of a ketogenic diet it and five out of the six ended up being able to get pregnant because it reversed their PCOS which is

driven by insulin resistance. So again, the common theme here is like not every woman should fast, but if you're dealing with metabolic health issues, you got to see like which one's more

important to you. Like are you concerned with a little bit of hormonal imbalance from a little bit of fasting here and there, or is the benefit that you get from correcting your bad metabolism

going to outweigh that risk? >> I want to talk to you about dry fast. Um, I've tried it before. It's much harder than a than a water fast. Can you explain the difference what it does to

the body? Is it true also that one day of dry fast equal approximately three days of water fast or is it something completely different? I know doctor will not advise people to do that and I don't

want to get you in trouble but what are the benefits of doing a dry fast versus a a water fast? >> Yeah, for sure. I mean, yeah, disclaimer, dry fasting is extreme. Um

>> and and for people who don't know just before uh dry fast a lot of people that are in the religion of Islam is during the Ramadan practice dry fast. >> Yeah, they do. And you know, but the

thing is is during Ramadan, they're only fasting from sunrise to sunset. So they're only fasting for 12 to 16 hours. You know, they're fasting the length of the day. So that

is not that is not super wild to go without food or water. I think sometimes people will do that without even realizing it. You know, maybe maybe not, but it's just like it could easily

happen right? >> And your body can survive that. >> Um, you know, we're talking about when you start pushing it longer, like yes, um, if you look at certain markers, a

24-hour dry fast is about the equivalent of 3 to four days of fasting as far as uh potentially fat loss and other sort of metabolic markers. Not all things, but for some of these things. Now, what

happens when you're dry fasting, and again, just the disclaimer is that I don't recommend people go out and do this unless you really know what you're doing. You your body creates something

that is called molecular water. We create water in our bodies. Uh, >> and it's probably the most pure water of all. >> It is. It's the most pure because it's

literally just molecular water at its core. There's nothing, no trace minerals, there's nothing in it. It's just water made from hydrogen and oxygen. Um, when fat is going through

metabolism, fat that's on our body is getting broken down and used for energy, one of the byproducts of that is hydrogen. Hydrogen is released from our fat. Now, when you breathe in and you

get oxygen, you get hydrogen that's been released from your fat and oxygen. So, you make a very molecularly pure water. Um, lots of interesting things that does that is not woowoo. That is very

documented that we create water. Not a big deal. Okay. But what happens is when you go and you are fasting and you're accelerating the rate at which you're burning the fat off the body, you're

accelerating the creation of this metabolic water because you're also not bringing water in. So the body says, well, we need more hydration. So it goes through a process of trying to create

more water. >> So in order to create more water, it demands more fat >> because it needs more hydrogen. >> So it's an accelerated process. Now, as

far as the longevity markers are concerned, uh, telomeirs, all of those things, we don't have evidence on that. The only evidence we really have is straight up just metabolic and very slim

amounts of evidence because it's really only one particular, I think it was a Russian doctor back in the early 2000s that was doing research on dry fasting that really published most of it. So, we

have very limited research, but the mechanisms are quite sound and they make sense, but it's hard to publish studies on something that would be deemed as dangerous, right? So they they don't

push those a lot. >> So all we have is the mechanisms and very small amounts of data to look at, but I can tell you from my own anecdotal experience, yes, it definitely works.

Um, you know, I've never gone more than a 24-hour dry fast. And it wasn't that hard. Did Did you worked out when you do it? >> I did, but I just didn't do anything

crazy. >> Yeah. Yeah. Want to keep it >> Yeah. Just like a short little resistance training. I didn't push my heart rate or anything.

>> That's right. That's right. And and uh we talk about certain uh you know, like the data. Do you think one of the reason why there's not much data on dry fasting and

even water fasts is because nobody makes money out of it? You know, if you look at who's funding a lot of these studies, and I'm not even trying to play the game of uh it's just the reality of it. Like

if you look at whole grain studies, they're funded by the grain industry or they're funded by cereal companies. Like someone's got to fund these studies. >> That's right. And it's just, you know,

some of the studies that you do see on fasting, some of them are uh you have philanthropists that donate their money for the studies. And it's just like, you know, like so these self-funded studies

are really hard to do. And if they do get them, then they're small. And then the industry says, well, those are small studies, you know, because well, yeah, because this dude is paying out of his

own pocket to run this study and he can only get a cohort of six people, you know. So it's not that this that the mechanism doesn't work or that there isn't a big study to do it. It's just

like where's the economic incentive? And that's not even pointing fingers and that's not even a conspiracy mindset. That's just flatout economics. It costs a lot to run these studies. It's like

we're we're left to just test on ourselves. And but we're seeing more and more and more research come out on like timerestricted eating. And you know, I just literally just today had released a

video. It was like the first ever study on a 7-day water fast that was like seven and it was detailed. It went into every like 3,000 different proteolases, uh, different enzymes, different

proteins, and expression of genes, and it was like looking at what happens through a 7-day fast. I mean, all I mean, share the details of it is fascinating. It's basically like after a

three-day fast, there's not a whole lot more benefit going to seven days. So, it's like three days, you get almost all the benefit of a seven-day. But it was wild that like it showed like what what

happens with the gut, what happens with all these different proteins that are expressed and systems that are kicking on. Point is like I was fascinated to see that study and it was a decent sized

study. I think there was like you know a couple dozen people or something. So it's it's happening. It just takes these one-offs and I don't know if we're ever going to see big clinical trials on it.

>> Yeah. It it needs to be because someone really care and want to showcase the the benefits of it. Another thing I want to talk about, my longest fast that I ever tried was a five days water fast. And I

wanted to do seven days a week. I wanted to do seven days a week when uh when I started, but uh I end up end up stopping at 5 days because I couldn't sleep well. I was like, and

>> I figured out that when I do my 3 days water fast four time a year, the best time to do it is when I'm busy. >> Like the worst thing is to do that while you're in vacation or while you're

you're not busy because you you're going to you're going to go crazy. What are the tricks that you can tell people to use uh when they do a three days water fast or or longer?

>> Yeah, man. I mean uh >> without without breaking the fast. Is is there something that they can like is is for example um carbonate water. I like it. Uh it it helped me

restrict my hunger a little bit. Is there other things that you're allowed to take? >> Yes. I mean uh you know for one um salt is a tremendous thing that absolutely

curbs your appetite. Um we have again rodent model research but there's like the brain when it receives a signal from salt it does curb the appetite. So a lot of times what happens is when you're

craving something sweet you're actually craving something salty. It's these things called NST neurons that are in our hindb brain and their gustatory response. So like we when we when salt

hits our gut it actually curbs these sweet cravings. So next time you're fasting and you're like oh I'm craving something sweet. All the kids are eating ice cream and I'm fasting. you know,

seriously, just have a concentration of salt. Put like, you know, make your water a little saltier than you normally would and actually get the taste of salt and you'll find that the appetite just

goes away. It's pretty pretty cool. Um, another thing is, uh, simply going for a walk because you're mobilizing more fat >> because remember fat is your primary fuel when you are fasting and when you

walk you go through lipolysis, you start liberating those fats. So all of a sudden you have fats going through your bloodstream. Your cells are getting the signal that you have fuel. So your

hunger goes away. Uh so like a little bit of a workout or a little bit of walking. It's like even you we're fasted right now and like we we worked out this morning. I wasn't hungry at all. I got a

little but I get a little hungry after I'm done, right? But if I were to go work out again, I would forget all about my hunger. >> Um and so it's so counterintuitive, but

also yes, uh you know, distractions like that's a big one. I like to do it again on a busy day, you know. And if you're not uh you know, if you're doing just a water fast, this doesn't apply, but if

you're allowing yourself to have caffeine, caffeine is probably one of the most powerful appetite suppressants. So if you're, you know, if you're not worried about having a little bit of

caffeine, uh, that's not, then green tea just kills my appetite. >> And one thing, one thing that I found out when I do a three days water fast, I I do things that I normally wouldn't do.

For example, cleaning my my closet or cleaning my garage or or or my pool house, stuff that I normally don't have the time to do. I drink that that because when you don't eat,

>> you find out very quickly that you have a lot of empty space in your schedule. It's crazy, you know. So, that's why and I love the your anecdote about the salt because Dr. Jason Fun I because I love

to to stay active during my uh three-day water fast. He told me to always before training uh to grab a pinch of salt and to to eat eat it to not deplete my mineral. Y

>> and to prevent me from having cramps. Who should not fast? What kind of people or what kind of of problems that people have should prevent them from fasting? It depends on the length of the fast. I

would say that people that are um you know type 1 diabetic probably need to be pretty careful. they need to watch, you know, if they type one type 1 diabetes where they have to give themselves an

insulin shot just because um, you know, like they they might just need to watch their blood sugar a little bit more, but I shouldn't say that they shouldn't fast. There's not a lot of people that

really can't get a benefit from at least a 24-hour fast. You know, I think there's some metabolic conditions that might make it harder when you start going, but there's there's really no

particular I'm sure there are some esoteric conditions. I know I talked to Dr. Domagugustino about this. I think we asked him a similar question and he's he did name off like one very specific

condition. I can't remember what it is, but it's like it's like a freaky condition. We're like, "No, if these people fast, it's really problematic." So, generally speaking, I think everyone

is okay to fast. It's just how comfortable are you with a little bit of discomfort? >> Yeah. It's a Yeah, you have to go into that discomfort to in order to have the

benefits. >> Yeah. If you were to give a a beginner that never fasted before a program, should he start with a 12-h hour, a 24-hour, or, you know, like a three

days? What would you recommend? Because I remember my first fast that I ever did after I I met Jason Fong. I'm I'm more an extreme guy. I went >> three days right away. You know, people

thought I was crazy in my entourage, but it's not that hard. Actually, >> I think if you're if you're a healthy person without metabolic conditions, go jump straight into a 24. Jumping

straight into at least like a 24. It's easy. It's clean. You're going to get the most like benefit before, you know, without feeling like you're torturing yourself. and your last meal before you

get into your fast and your the meal to break the fast. I will cover that a little bit, but the last meal before it does does it has something to do to make it your fast easier or harder

>> for sure. Yeah, if you I would recommend the last meal going into a fast, moderate protein, high fat, zero carb, >> keto ketogen. >> Yeah. get yourself because that way

what's going to happen is you're going to be closer to producing ketones in your fast. What curbs your hunger when you're fasting is the presence of ketones. Like once ketones start

producing after like 16 18 hours of fasting, you're no longer hungry. If you eat a bunch of carbohydrates going into your fast, you're putting, you know, 100 grams of carbs between you and ketosis.

So now you got to burn through those 100 carbs. Then you have to get So you're extending the period of time. If you cut out the carbs earlier, the more ketogenic you are going into a fast,

guaranteed, the easier the fast is, you know. So, if you're already producing ketones or close to producing ketones, by the time you enter the fast, you're going to be pumping them out like crazy

and you won't be hungry. And when you break the fast, the pro the protocol that we did when you came to Montreal, we we had a little meal and then we had we wait maybe a few minute to take a

walk or something like a 30 minute, then we had a bigger meal. Would you do the same protocol for a 24 hours or you just jump into a normal? >> Yeah, for 24 you could No, still

absolutely. Even when I do an 18 hour 20our fast, I still do like a a miniature version of what we did. >> Really? Even when when it's uh like 18 hours,

>> I still do a little bit of bone broth, a small meal, and then 30 minutes later I have my regular meal. It's just I've made it habit, you know? It's it's a good thing. And also there's a a mental

discipline aspect to it where it's like I want to be I want to be in control of this as much as I can. And I want to be able to not over be overcome with temptation. I want to be in control when

I break this fast is I want to be this is this is my goal. This is what I'm after. I want to take care of my body. That first meal that you come in like this is my temple. This is my organism

that I want to take care of. And what's most important to me in my life right now is the purity of my body and how I can connect to source through my body and how I can, you know, be closer to

the universe and closer to God. And like eating clean helps me that way. So it's like when I'm fasted, I'm ve I feel very pure. I feel very clean and I feel very connected to source to put it like that.

So there's spiritual and sort of mental reasons why I do that too. So the first food that I put in my body, I want to nourish me and I want to be I want this food to take care of me. I I really

admire your discipline. It's unbelievable. You know, that's one thing I I I learned from you. It's like consistency and discipline. I It's hard for me because I love sugar. I love

those things and and but since I I met you the the first time when you came in Montreal, like I I change a few things. Sometime I force myself to have a breakfast

>> and I train with an empty stomach. Something that you told me to change because you know you don't want to adapt. You always like training you always want to change thing. And also in

my training today, we train and I'm a the type of person I like to do things very explosive and then take a long break in between my set. But you you're you're different. And when I train with

you, I hate it because you make me do like freaking a set, then right away jump into another one, another one, and it doesn't stop for like 20 minutes. It's It's crazy. You put me through

hell. It's unbelievable. But I really like it. It it it makes me develop a different system, right? you you you you like to shuck the body all the time. >> Yeah. Yeah, definitely. And well, you

show me a different way of, you know, looking at sprinting and looking at So, it's it's all about, you know, I'm not a not trying to be a one-trick pony. I mean, I I I'm not going to be breaking

any records at my age anymore. And I just want to I want to be the most well-rounded and be able to have at least a fighting chance in a little bit of everything. Man, you're you're a

great athlete. You're you're a I would say there's people that are a specialist, but you're more of a generalist. You know, you can do all type of work of pull of push of exercise

that that you know, for a long time, a short time like that's what I like and and I learned because I was designing my training only to be good in a specific way in terms of fitness, but now I'm

going to change it to be more uh you know, I need to work on things that that I don't like to do as well. You know what I mean? >> Yeah. Yeah.

>> And and just to finish two things, if you were giving a chance to to tell, for example, your someone that you love

>> to eat something like at least every day, like what would it be one food that he needs to have for for for the rest of his life? Every day. >> Yeah.

>> Okay. Oh, my personal favorite, I would say ground beef because it's it's protein, it's collagen, it's it's all of all of that stuff. But if you're looking for like a nutrient-dense food that I

think that people could add into their diet that would add a lot of value, people aren't going to like it. But, you know, 1 oz of beef liver is so nutrient-dense. It could replace your

multivitamin. It can replace half the supplements in your supplement cabinet. It's a powerful powerful food. And I think that it gives a lot of people what they're missing. Uh especially in

today's diets which are just so full of processed foods and missing a lot of those fats soluble vitamins that you can really only truly get in a whole food form from something like liver or you

know sardines would be like a close second. It's very interesting that you mentioned that because it it's probably the reason why in nature you see a lot of predatory animal when they kill their

prey they go for the liver. You know, it's maybe the the the part that has the most nutrient. >> Definitely definitely the most nutrient dense.

>> And the opposite of the spectrum, what would you never want to have on your plate? >> Margarine. >> Margaret.

>> Out of that to my mother. >> Yeah. No, but I mean realistically um I mean basically probably something along the lines of what we talked about. Something like an

Oreo, right? High sugar, high fat, high trans fat. is something that a lot of people do like and they should avoid at all costs. >> I just think there's better options. I

think there's, you know, you can still have indulgence. You can still have these things that are delicious and and and you just have to know how to like, you know, look for and I'm not saying I

would never have an Oreo. I mean, I've obviously had an Oreo, but it's one of those things where it's like, okay, like there's a perfect example of a collective group of things that we know

are problematic for the human body. One thing that you mentioned uh today in training that that is bad that I used to eat a lot when I was young but I now that I know I wish I would not have done

it. It's cereal, right? A lot of cereals are full of sugar. >> Yes. Yeah, for sure. That's I mean so I'd say like you know something that people are already eating like the Oreo

I guess people already eat but the Oreo is just a perfect example of like this has got the the three things that we kind of talked about this the trans fats the sugar and the um you know the the

saturated fat that's just a problem problematic but something that people eat that they think is healthy that's definitely detrimental is something like granola is such an example granola is so

>> it's a cereal you know it's it's like people have granola they'll have a big bowl of granola then they'll put their milk in it And this has got, you know, you've got 50 60 grams of sugar in a big

bowl of granola along with the way they get the granola to stick together is with oil. So they're using like canola oil and this and that and then they're cooking it together. So it's like got

oxidized oils that have been like basically sitting out. So you've got a high amount concentration of cruddy fats, you've got a refined grain, and you've got sugar. So you've got like a

high calorie hodge podge of proteins or fats and carbohydrates with pretty much no protein to it. very little protein. So, it's just and people are like, "Oh, I'm doing the right thing by having

granola." And it's just such a a scop. It's just like there's there are better cereal options. I mean, I'm not affiliated with them, but there's a company called Three Wishes. I don't

know if your kids ever eat that one. >> Three? No. >> Yeah. I mean, that one's like they use monk fruit and it's like uh chickpea flour and it tastes really damn good.

Like my kids eat it. Again, I don't have affiliation with them, but it's like it's a cereal. They're >> It's not overly processed >> and it's alt for cereal standard. It's

still a cereal, you know. It's still And cereal is very easy to overeat, right? It's like if you look at the serving size of cereal, it's like, okay, on the on the box, it'll be like a half a cup.

Who the [ __ ] has a half a cup of cereal? >> Like that. I mean, that's that much. Like, you're I mean, talk about discipline. That's discipline. If you can have a half a cup of cereal, you're

more disciplined than me, right? So, it's it's like you you people are usually having two, three cups of it. >> It's a it's a hell of a tease, you know? Half a cup. My god. And and how about

the do and the don't? What you think it's important to be healthy? A do outside of the diet and the don't you should never do >> that that a lot of people are doing that

>> lifestyle like outside of an independent. >> Yes. I'm not saying like drug cocaine we all know it's bad but do that are that that you think everybody should do and

the don't that you think that you see people do doing that should never do. >> Okay. I think uh everyone if they have access to it should be using a sauna and if they don't have a sauna the evidence

is really strong on taking a hot bath as hot as you can handle it without burning yourself >> really and it's called hot water immersion and it gets all the same

benefits of a sauna it it's because you actually if you want to heat the body like heating yourself in hot water is going to heat you even faster than ambient air right so like that's what

I'll do in hotel rooms is I will fill up the the bath bathtub as hot as I can and I'll just sit there and just start sweating. So, there's no excuse. Like you can have

>> you you lose weight and the >> you can lose weight, but it's also just you get all the benefits. The heat shock a heat therapy is probably my number one like non-ex exercise, non-diet like

thing. >> Do you use sauna after your training? Because it helped promote hypertrophy, right? >> Whenever I have the opportunity to

because also it allows me to get I get more out of the sauna because I'm already halfway there, you know? I'm already warm. So, it's like, you know, if you go into a sauna in the evening

time and you haven't worked out, it takes you 10 minutes before you're sweating. That's right. Like, if I go straight from a workout, I'm sweating in 30 seconds. Uh, next up, I do think that

cold plunge is still really good for the brain, right? I feel like, yeah, there's effects if you do it right after your workout, it it can blunt some of the growth. Um, not a huge deal, but mainly

it's just like mainly I do it for the brain. Like I I it's a way for me to I do something difficult. It's also very good for the immune system if you just do like you don't have to go in for

long, you know, one to three minutes. It's all you don't need long. So, that's really good. Um, you know, I also feel like walking is tremendously underrated. I

feel like walking is very therapeutic. >> Yeah, that's the I mean, the best thing as far as from fat loss, everything is just simply walking. And then as far as like things, lifestyle things that

people are doing, um, >> you mentioned cold plunge and I really love cold plunge, but I I don't use it for the physical benefits. I mostly use it once or twice a week and I use it for

therapeutic use. >> I use it in the morning and when you're under your warm covers, the worst thing to do, the most unpleasant thing to do is probably to go and to throw yourself

in an ice bath. My ice bath is about 50 Fahrenheit, which is 10° C, and I stay for 3 minutes. And I do it because I know there's a place in your brain called the anterior

singulate cortex that is stimulate when you force yourself to do hard things. >> I listened to Andrew Uberman was saying that the more you force yourself to do

hard thing, the more you stimulate that part of your brain, the anterior singulate cortex and the more you become good at doing hard things. So I do it in a way to be better at doing hard things.

And I think in life and everything you're trying to accomplish most of the time you have to get out your comfort zone. And the more you force yourself to get out your comfort

zone, the more you become good at getting out of your comfort zone. >> Y >> the don't. What is the thing that you see a lot of people doing and you think

that it should never be done? >> Yeah. Well, I'm a big I think sleep is so dang important and I'm less of a fan of just saying, "Hey, you need to get eight hours." I'm more of a fan of like,

"Hey, the sleep you should get is quality sleep." So, I'd say the the worst thing, and most people know this by now, but being on your damn phone when you go to bed. Like, that is across

so many levels. It's so hard to avoid, but if you can just stop the phone use even 30 minutes before bed, just, you know, a lot of people they go, they they're on their phone and then right

when they get to bed, they plug it in and put it on their nightstand. Just do the whole plugging it in, put on your nightstand 30 minutes before and give yourself 30 minutes without your phone

before bed because it's the evidence on just the blue light in your face right before bed. It's just it's so undeniable. like it's such a bad thing to have that much blue light. That is

absolutely changing your your sleep patterns, your your rhythms and your sleep. And we're seeing more evidence that like eight hours might not be what we need. Like maybe maybe some people do

require just six. Quite frankly, I do okay with like six or seven. Um but that six or seven needs to be good quality. And if you are fragmenting that by having your phone in your face, you

know, the other thing that is really interesting that I have recently discovered and I this is only newer stuff for me because or this p particular one because some of the

experts I've had a lot of us have LED lights in our homes. Um and these LED lights, they flicker at a really certain rate and they flicker very fast. And so you can think of like an LED light as

basically flickering on and off 30 to 60 times every second. Like it's so fast. Your eye can detect that. We don't physically like our consciousness doesn't act but our eye is detecting it.

So if you imagine someone here flipping the lights on and off, how mentally exhausting that is to the brain. So what's happening is that rapid flicker is actually causing a dopamine response

constantly in your brain. So we started to see like with kids like hyperactivity under fluorescent lights but under the LED lights in homes. So what we do is yes we have LED lights in our homes

because a lot of homes do but at night we turn on incandescent lights. We turn on the regular incandescent bulbs or we turn off the LEDs and it has made such a difference in our kids calming down

because kids are so sensitive to that. So that's just something that people are that they maybe should consider changing out but they don't even realize is a problem. And I think we're going to see

that changing over the next because the the size is just so strong. It's so obvious like okay this is a flicker. This is the fluorescent light. This is it's not you know an incandescent light

they were removed because people were saying well they're inefficient because most of the light most of the energy is dissipated as heat. So they were inefficient. So through the whole phase

of like oh we need to become efficient let's switch to LEDs. People stopped using regular incandescent lights. And it goes, those incandescent lights are basically like a campfire in a light

bulb. So if you look at a campfire, 90% of the energy is heat. Only about 10% of it is light. So >> in the government's eyes, that's that's inefficient. That's bad for the

environment. When in reality, we're frying our brains with LEDs. So that's that's just a simple thing that has made that simple thing has made such a difference in our family's quality of

life. >> Wow. Such a difference. we sleep better and we don't feel sometimes you just feel why am I amped up why and k it shows up in kids so easily because we

can control it a little bit but kids it's like why are they going crazy right now you know because they're so much more sensitive to those things and they don't have the ability to throttle it

like we do >> and sleep is so important we spend oneird or maybe one/4 of our life in bed sleeping it's it's crucial >> how about the the people that drink

coffee later during the day or drink alcohol I I know some people that tells me oh when I have my glass of wine, it put put me right into deep sleep, which is BS. Or they smoke marijuana, it it it

even if they sleep >> on the on it, it it destroyed the the quality of their sleep. >> Yeah. Yeah. Their their their sleep their sleep quality the the stages of

sleep are completely disrupted. Alcohol is very GABAurgic, which means it's it binds to the GABA receptor in your brain. So the reason you feel good, you feel calm. But what happens is there's a

GABA rebound. So it's like GABA is yeah it makes you feel sociable. It makes you feel calm. It makes you feel loose. So and it can make you fall asleep but then you have a GABA rebound when like that

alcohol is no longer binding as an alossteric modulator and you just so it does the opposite. So then like you might fall asleep and get okay sleep for like the first hour but then after that

it's just you're you're basically fluttering in this pseudo pseudo awake state. Um so definitely not good. Definitely. I mean, alcohol is, you know, it's it's not going away anytime

soon, but like we're seeing even like the the Gen Zers like they're saying like they're actually alcohol companies are legit. I don't know if you've seen this, they're getting concerned because

people that are like under 35, they're just not drinking as much. Like there's just like no because they're they're I mean there's there's change. They're opting more for like state altering

compounds. Sounds like you're seeing a lot of the younger generation going more for psychedelics and things like that which have their own issues but they're not they're not drinking anymore.

>> Maybe maybe the youth doesn't drink as much but they consume a lot more cell phone cell phone light that that's the problem. >> That's the problem, right? So it's

definitely it's it's a catch. And I'm not like anti-alcohol. I I think that like it's all good but like people that use it to to relax every night. No, come on. That's No, that's got to stop. Yeah,

Thomas, one of the reason why I really love your your channel uh and I got interested uh is because you you promote uh wellness uh and also fasting and fasting is not promoted in a

world where the the pharmaceutical industry, you know, control and pretty much they want to heal people but they they I think their number one priority is to make money and fasting nobody

makes money about it. And um do you have any future project or anything you would like to to announce or promoting here? You know, as far as projects, I mean not specific philanthropic projects that I'm

working on, but I would say, you know, my my big goal over the next couple of years and I'm making pivot with my content is is helping people understand that,

how do I even put this into words? I think we're at a very interesting time in society right now where people now more than ever are starting to have, you know, these ex existential questions,

right? Because AI is coming in and changing our lives so much and it's streamlining things and people are maybe out of work and or their self-worth is changing because AI took their job and

like what used to give them identity doesn't exist anymore. So, I'm seeing more and more people like clawing for even spirituality. like people now more than ever are like looking at those

things because they're like what am I without this? So I it's like an uprising in a way. Um, and I found that like where I'm really enjoying helping people and I don't necessarily monetize it is

if I can help people just become clear and pure in their bodies, then they can they can feel that and solve that and have that self-love and that self-worth. That's really important because I'm

seeing it people just the frustration. It's a it's going to be an epidemic of people having existential issues >> like what what is the point of my life when AI starts taking all of our jobs?

>> I I think I think people need to adapt. I think I don't think AI is bad. I think AI could be used as a tool if you know how to use it. I use AI to do this interview. It it put all my question

like for me I didn't write it off. I use AI but but >> I think it's possible to adapt if the information is made available to them. Like someone like my dad for

example, he doesn't, you know, he doesn't want to adapt. He doesn't even have a cell phone. it doesn't but in order to adapt you need to get out of your comfort zone you know if and of

course if the information is made available to them you know they need to make the jump right >> yeah man no so I mean it's I've got nothing that I'm specifically promoting

you know my my my channel fortunately I've got great media arrangements where I you know in brand relationships where my channel makes great money and I have it I've decided purposely not to go

create my own product because I don't want my content to uh I don't want to feel like my content is circum navigating back to a product I'm trying to sell. I feel like that takes away

from um my creativity, >> the authenticity. Yeah. >> And so, um you know, I'm very blessed that my my my life is great and we have a good income and a great team and a

great family. So, it's like for me, it's more like what what is my what am I trying to promote as far as raising people's awareness and things? And again, it comes right back down to like

now more than ever, like it's important that we take care of our bodies because we're going to come back to a place really soon where not to sound melancholic, but this is all we've got.

You got this, you've got this single body, you know what I mean? What's good to live in this world if we're not healthy? Health is the most precious gift life gives us. And uh Thomas de
